Cleaning Lego Pieces
In brief the problem isnt dirt so much as a chemical reaction in the visible surface layer of the ABS plastic itself caused by UV rays in sunlight.

Using a toothbrush and a weak solution of dish washing liquid and water works but this is so incredibly laborious I cant spend the next five years of my life cleaning tens of thousands of pieces of Lego. We recommend that you clean your LEGO parts by hand using water no hotter than 104F 40C and a soft cloth or sponge. The other issue I have to deal with is dirty bricks.
Plan to do it over 4-6 days as lego takes 2-3 days to fully dry. I have tried soaking the pieces for 24 hours in weak washing liquid and water but this doesnt work. Handwash your Lego parts with warm water but it should only be up to 40C 104F.
After the soak use a toothbrush to remove the loosened dirt and grime. I bought laundry bags but dont know whether to put it into the washing machine side loader or wash it manually in the bath. You can use dish soap to remove the dirt but then the parts creak and crackle.

Drys them off faster. Once fully dry you can polish the Lego brick lightly with a soft cloth. Bathtub sink or container if your Lego storage container is big enough use this it will clean that at the same time.
Since tiny scratches show up more on the transparent LEGO pieces such as windshield so do keep them separate when you give your LEGO bricks a good clean. You can add a mild detergent to the water - please rinse them well with clear water afterwards and youre done. Never put Lego into the washing machine or dishwasher.
