Black worms belong to the Phylum Annelida Class Name Oligochaeta Genus and Species Lumbriculus variegates. For example inchworms the caterpillars of geometrid moths have three pairs of legs at the front of their bodies and two to three pairs at the back and move with a looping motion. Many roll into balls see PillbugsSowbugs Isopoda.
Millipedes also known by numerous other names like diplopods and thousand-leggers are a group of arthropods characterized by two pairs of jointed legs on most of their body segments. The worm exits the host at a time when the insect seeks water which causes the host to die. Black worms can be found in droves in ponds and marshes.
Adults feed on leaves and fruit. If the black worms on the bathroom floor or the ones under the kitchen sink are looking for moisture the strategy for controlling them is clear. Photo credit Andrew Porter.
Millipedes are those long black bugs with what seems like a million tiny legs that you see crawling in your bedroom windows and that curl into a tight ball when threatened. In the bathroom that might mean you have to run the exhaust fan more often. The worms are usually found entangled into a ball of worms or alone.
